Take a few minutes to evaluate your home’s exterior lighting. Be sure your bulbs are working and bright enough! This is a simple, cost-effective step you can take to decrease crime in your area. A well-lit home is far less desirable to break into than one with poor exterior lighting.
This time of year in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and Kentucky, the sun is going down at 4:45PM! That means you could be coming home to a dark driveway.
What we want is well-lit around the entire home. Floodlights with LED bulbs work great when placed on all four corners (or more if you have a more detailed floor plan) of the home. We recommend your front porch and back porch entries have light as well. Oftentimes there are fixtures already around those doors, but you want to make sure they have bulbs in them that are working and that are nice and bright.
You can get LED bulbs from any hardware store (we buy ours from Home Depot or Lowes). Flood lights are very universal so you shouldn’t run into sizing issues.
Replacing your bulbs is as easy as 1-2-3!
- Climb ladder
Tip: Be sure to use a ladder with plenty of height. You aren’t supposed to go all the way to the top. We recommend you have a spotter as well, just in case. Safety first!
- Unscrew the old bulb
- Screw in the new one!
That’s it! That’s all it takes to ensure that no burglaries are happening in your home due to the fact that it’s dark and nobody will see.

We recommend that you put these lights on timers. You may forget to turn them on or you may be on vacation, but a burglar would never know! Lights on mean you’re home!!!
