It’s the Most Dangerous Time of the Year: Holiday Travel Tips

The holiday season is upon us. That means Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, gift wrapping, travel and home robberies. Holiday break-ins are all about opportunity. If you’re heading out of town, check out these 5 tips to ensure your holiday cheer isn’t spoiled by crime:

  1. Use the BUDDY system

Let a trusted friend or neighbor know about your travel plans. If possible, have them park in your driveway while you’re away to give the home a “lived in” look.

2. Don’t deck your halls with clues you’re away

Stop your deliveries and pause your mail. Advertisements piling up, packages, uncollected newspapers and mail are a giveaway to burglars that your home is a good target.

3. Smiling can be your favorite, but don’t share right away

Don’t post the details about your travel on social media sites – not all “friends” are really friends you can trust. Wait until you return to share photos and videos from your trip!

4. Be sure Santa knows you just want your family back (safe) this year

Check traffic and weather conditions for your journey to and from your destination. If you’re driving, be sure to also check your tire pressure and fluids before hitting the road.

5. Don’t be a cotton-headed ninny muggins

Consider smart home devices to be able to adjust temperature settings and turn lights on/off, as well as check in with video doorbell and other cameras while you’re away.
