Who Can YOU Trust to Build Your Smart Home?

There are lots of options when it comes to home security systems AND there are even more options when it comes to smart home automation. You may be thinking it would be easy to do-it-yourself (hello Amazon) or, easier still, just bundle services with your cable / internet provider. Cable and internet providers are one of many businesses that have jumped on the smart home bandwagon with their own platforms and products; some even have noticeable names like Google and, at first glance, may seem like a logical choice. Not all smart home options are created equal. In fact, some recent customers who turned to Lowe’s for their smart home services were left gravely disappointed.

According to Security Sales & Integration magazine, “Lowe’s has announced that it will shut the [smart home] platform [Iris] on March 31.” The Iris app and services will be permanently discontinued because “Lowe’s is focusing on its core home improvement business” (see Iris Shutdown). And, therein lies the potential risk: if you build your security and smart home system piecemeal through do-it-yourself products or if you build through a company whose primary focus is not security and smart home, you’re left scrambling when they shut down their service platform or decide to focus on their “core business”.
